1. What about Easy Digital Downloads made you choose it as a platform to sell your plugin?

Our decision to use Easy Digital Downloads really came down to ease of implementation and customization. We spend thousands of hours building our products and when they’re ready for the public we don’t want to spend one more minute than necessary getting them live. The features available in the base plugin and the extensions such as licensing, content restriction, manual payments, etc. all factored into why we thought Easy Digital Downloads was the best option for us. And I’m glad to report that we were right.

I will say that another contributing factor was you yourself, Pippin. I’ve read your blog and used other plugins of yours. Your code is extremely well written and you have been very responsive to questions anyone has ever asked. Since support is such a huge part of a great product and something we take very seriously we wanted to use a plugin that was really backed by great developers that we felt like we knew on some level.

2. Are there features in Easy Digital Downloads that you find indispensable?

I can’t think of one feature that we use that is more indispensable than another. I will say that the being able to extend the plugin for our situation was crucial and something so many other eCommerce solutions lack. For instance we wanted to serve our products and automatically update then through our own SVN where we do our development. Easy Digital Downloads was built in such a way that we were able to hook into all those processes very easily. When we update one of our products the licensing extension checks our repo and zips and serves the current stable version. I can’t even begin to explain the hours this saves us as our product offerings increase.

3. How was your experience setting up and configuring Easy Digital Downloads for your site?

Easy Digital Downloads couldn’t have been easier to implement. We had been selling a few plugins with a homegrown eCommerce solution that was riddled with issues. The frustration was that as crucial as the selling piece was we didn’t have the time to take away from our products to fix it. When we got ready to launch our 2.0 of our main plugin we were also changing our entire structure. We had hundreds of customers that need to be converted into the new structure as well as twice as many products because of this new structure.

Easy Digital Downloads made this process extremely easy. The best part for me as we extend our products is that it scales. I know that regardless of what we decide to build next that Easy Digital Downloads if fully capable of handling even the strangest of edge cases.

4. Are you using any Easy Digital Downloads extensions? If so, which ones?

Absolutely! In fact, this is one of the things I love about Easy Digital Downloads. We loved it so much that it’s the direction we went with one of our own products. Currently we use Content Restriction, Manual Purchases, PayPal Pro & Express Gateway, and Software Licenses. We plan on using a few more in the future.

All of these extensions are crucial to our work flow. The great part about extensions is the removal of unnecessary bloat that comes with many plugins. Instead of having to navigate every option someone could possibly think of you can add just the ones that are necessary for you.

5. What’s a feature you wish Easy Digital Downloads had but doesn’t?

This is tough because I thinks it’s very dependent on my own uses cases and not something everyone might need but I can think of two things right off and one of which I believe is in the works in one way or another.

The first would be the ability to bundles products so you could offer several of them together at a discounted rate and allow each to still have an appropriate license. We would love to offer a discount to customers who buy all our extensions at once and although we can work around this a bit with discounts an actual official bundle would be ideal.

The second feature is more unique to us perhaps. While Easy Digital Downloads does include some reporting for sales tax it’s not ideal for my situation. Right now it’s kind of an opt-in option that adds tax to the total purchase. If I were that customer I would never opt-in to pay more and therefore I’m never really appropriately reporting sales tax I am responsible for.

I would prefer the option to have customers required to include their address and calculate how much sales tax I would need to report on their purchase based on my fixed price. That way the customer pays the same and I take on the burden of the sales tax. Again, this is really probably an edge case that would be awesome if it were an option but doesn’t make or break the system in any way.

In the end, Easy Digital Downloads is the only WordPress plugin I would recommend if solely selling digital products. There simply isn’t a better solution available. And it keeps getting better.

As of EDD v1.5.1, authentication is now done like this:

The token is an automatically generated md5 hash that is used to identify the user making the request. This is much more secure for a variety of reasons and is better because it does not require that an email be supplied in plain text.

Requests made with an email address will result in a failed authentication error, so please be sure you update your applications.

We chose to make this abrupt change now as the API is still very new, rather than wait a while and make things more difficult to transition to. This method of authentication also opens the doors to better and better updates for the API in the future.

What about Easy Digitial Downloads made you choose it as a platform to sell your plugin?

It’s ability to be extended and customized to any situation. I had previously used Cart66 for Soliloquy, and after it taking down my site for nearly a week, I made the migration over to Easy Digital Downloads to handle everything. I have hooked, filtered, unhooked and the like in tons of areas of the plugin, and I love the results. The custom checkout page looks awesome, and my conversion rates have increased dramatically since switching to EDD. It’s super easy to use and setup, and I wouldn’t recommend anything else if you are selling digital downloads through WordPress.

Are there features in Easy Digitial Downloads that you find indispensable?

Hooks and filters. Every plugin should be using the core WordPress API in its ecosystem, and EDD does a superb job at this. There is always a hook or filter right where I need one to be. Because of that, I can turn EDD into whatever type of selling mechanism that I want.

How was your experience setting up and configuring Easy Digital Downloads for your site?

Migrating from Cart66 was a bit of a pain, but setting up EDD was really easy. It didn’t take long to get my products in place, get discount codes ready and integrate other payment systems into the plugin. Pippin was right there to help with any issues that did pop up, and I was even able to contribute back to the plugin with some fixes of my own. You won’t find anything easier to setup than EDD.

Are you using any Easy Digitial Downloads extensions? If so, which ones?

Sure am. I’m using the PayPal Pro/Express, Zendesk, Sharesale (which I built!), Email Templates and Manual Payments addons. They all rock and are an integral part of the success of Soliloquy. Each one plays a unique role and I am super grateful that they are available for me to use.

What’s a feature you wish Easy Digital Downloads had but doesn’t?

A Membership module. Membership is tough, but it makes sense to have a membership module available for those who buy the products. I built my own makeshift membership module for Soliloquy, and it would be great to have a generalized and distributable option for EDD sometime in the future.

After responding to these interview questions, Thomas was made aware of the Recurring Payments extension that provides integral membership features.

The most substantial change that users will notice is the dramatically improved checkout page. We spent a long time discussion the user experience of the checkout page and the changes in v1.5 are what came from the discussion.

Many of the changes we made were inspired from very prominent and successful UX studies done throughout the e-commerce industry.

Some of the highlights of the new checkout UX are:

• Description text for each field to ensure customers understand what the field is for
• Better placement of fields and field label
• Improved default styling
• Option to define a default payment method that is loaded immediately
• Payment method select simplified by being changed to radio buttons

But the checkout UX isn’t the only thing we have done in v1.5.

New RESTful API

While targeted directly at developers, the new API that we have built into Easy Digital Downloads makes it possible to build fantastic 3rd party applications for retrieving store stats and info for earnings, sales, products, and customers. This API will make it possible to build mobile applications for quickly checking your store’s stats, to build desktop widgets for displaying your latest sales, and many more really powerful integrations.

The API is fully documented and ready to be used.

New Fees Class

The new EDD_Fees class, also targeted for developers, allows for arbitrary fees to be added to the shopping cart. Fees can be positive or negative (a discount) amounts and make it exceptionally easy for adding things like handling fees, member discounts, global store discounts, and anything else.

The EDD_Fees class is what makes the Simple Shipping extension possible, in case you need a real world use case.

Improved Discount Codes

The discount code system in EDD is something we have wanted to upgrade for a long time, and today it is here. Discount codes can now be limited to specific products, one or many, allowing you better control over store promotions. With this upgrade you can now require that specific products be purchased in order for a discount to be valid.

Along with product-specific discounts, you can also now set on a per-discount basis whether discounts can be used once-per-customer or an unlimited number of times.

Improved Export and Reporting

We have added some minor, yet important, updates to the Reports and Export page that will be exceptionally useful:

• Estimated monthly earnings and sales storewide
• Export payments by status
• Export all customers of specific products

We have had a lot of discussion on the subject, which you can read on Github and are now looking to you, the users, to provide a little feedback on what you think we should do.

There are two options at this time:

1. Keep the terms of use exactly as they are.
2. Move the terms of use to a normal WP page and link to it.

The second option, which is what we are considering would mean that the text that currently resides in Downloads > Settings > Misc > Terms of Use, would be automatically transferred to a new page. The text for “Agree to our terms” next to the checkbox during checkout would then be linked to this new page.

This may seem really simple and trivial, but it turns out there are actually a lot of different complications to consider, as have been detailed on the Github issue.

Using Easy Digital Downloads to sell our add-ons was a pretty easy decision. We knew that we were going to be developing our PRO add-on which allowed people to ping our server and download the updated winners and losers during the tournament. Because of that, we wanted to use some sort of licensing system. We needed a way to reasonably keep an eye on our server costs and resources. We also knew that due to the relatively short sales cycle we were going to have, that we would need to launch our PRO add-on before it was 100% complete to get feedback from users and find out where our pain points were once it was out into the wild. Because of that, we wanted our customers to be able to easily update their add-on. Easy Digital Downloads has an extension that already handled that. We didn’t want to reinvent the wheel and wanted to maximize our production time on OUR plugin, not writing and creating systems to support it. Additionally, I had read a tutorial post the developer had done on using bbPress as your support forum and your use of the Restrict Content extension. Essentially, the EDD developers had already laid out the path, I was just following it.

2. Are there features in Easy Digitial Downloads that you find indispensable?

For us, the License and update engine extension are indispensable. We also just wanted something that just worked. We didn’t have time to really mess around with things for days.

3. How was your experience setting up and configuring Easy Digitial Downloads for your site?

It went really, really quickly. I think I had to RTFM twice. I looked at how to create my own button URL one time and then looked to see if it was possible to use the Content Restriction extension to link multiple sales to one forum. Which I found out I was not able to do.

4. Are you using any Easy Digitial Downloads extensions? If so, which ones?

We are currently using the License Extension, The S3 Extension, and the Content Restriction Extension. Additionally, we’ve purchased the Social Share Extension and the extension to run an affiliate program. We just haven’t gotten around to integrating them into our sales flow yet.

5. What’s a feature you wish Easy Digitial Downloads had but doesn’t?

I wish it was possible to bundle multiple items and still distribute a license code. Although, I know the license extension is not part of core. I think the easiest way to add the functionality would be by extending the discount system to allow for X dollars off or Y% off if X, Y, Z items are purchased. Then the items could still be purchased “individually” and the license would still be generated. Creating a single button to add multiple items at the same time would be a good match to the extended discount system. Which I’ve not tried, so maybe that is already possible.

Additionally, as I mentioned I purchased the Restrict Content add-on to EDD, and I wish that it had the capability to allow multiple purchases be tied to the same forum.

• Shop Accountant – This role can see payment history, earnings, reports, and manage payments
• Shop Worker – This role can edit / create products but not see any statistics or reports for the products
• Shop Vendor – This role can edit / create their own products, but nothing else

These new user roles will give shop owners much great control over who can do what, and also make it easier for shops to bring on additional workers without having to worry about them having access to sensitive information.

We’ve made quite a few other minor enhancements, including adding an alert in the dashboard if the checkout page is ever accidentally deleted, zipcode validation during checkout (if present), excerpt support for the Download post type, improved price display in the dashboard for variable priced items, support for bulk editing product prices, and more.

Along with the enhancements, quite a few bugs were fixed. The most notable being:

• A missing DIV tag in the Dashboard Summary widget
• A problem with the Japanese Yen decimal display
• A problem with HTML encoding of the discounted amount during checkout
• A problem with inaccurately counting the number of payments in the system

Once of the other enhancements that users will find useful is the new “Revoked” status for purchases. This is a status you can assign to payments from customers that you do not want to have access to their files anymore. The payment stays in the system but becomes inaccessible to the buyer. The primary use case for when a customer is found to be sharing the purchased assets and you need to ensure the customer doesn’t continue to download the files.

The primary bug fixes in this release involve a problem with setting prices above 1000, discount codes set to 100% didn’t work correctly, and some issues with jQuery validation of the checkout field.

In regards to enhancements, we have some really good ones for you.

Ajaxed Checkout

When submitting the checkout form, it is now done with ajax, meaning the page never reloads if there are errors present in the checkout data. This not only makes the experience smoother but also ensures that field data doesn’t get emptied out when there is an error.

New Report Views

The Reports page is one of the most important parts of the plugin and we’ve made it better. You can now view a graph of sales / earnings for Today, This Week. and Last Week.

Multi Option Purchase Mode

This enhancement makes it possible to purchase multiple variations of the same product. There is a new setting above the Variable Price section that lets you enable it. When enabled, the variable prices will be displayed as checkboxes that allow the customer to purchase any and all options. This is exceptionally great, for example, for musicians that wish to sell individual tracks and complete albums.

The short codes for purchase buttons, while a small feature, is a great implementation It allows me to add purchase paths in custom places, and he discount code options are flexible and extremely customizable.

3. How was your experience setting up and configuring Easy Digitial Downloads for your site?

For a full customization it took a little longer than one would expect, but out of the box, EDD was functional. I think using a setup tutorial or something guiding through the basic areas to configure would be nice (maybe with the pointer).

4. Are you using any Easy Digitial Downloads extensions? If so, which ones?

I am currently using Software Licensing as well as Pushover Notifications.

5. What’s a feature you wish Easy Digitial Downloads had but doesn’t?

I wish EDD had the ability to create ratings as well as the microdata that goes along with it. This would allow search results of the products in Google to show their rating.

The original point of giving automatic priority support to extension buyers was so that they could get any issues they encountered with the extensions resolved as quickly as possible. The vast majority of the time, however, the priority support access was used for non-extension related issues, and that’s the primary reason we’re making some changes.

From this point on, extension purchases will not grant access to priority support. That being said, all extension purchases still include unlimited support for the extensions purchased, except it’s limited to the particular extensions that were purchased, instead of being open to all areas of support.

If you need support for an extension that you have purchased, we ask that all questions be asked in the appropriate forum for the particular extension in question. All extension forums are here. We treat all extension-related support requests as priority.

What about existing priority support users that have gained access via extension purchases? Your access will remain unchanged and you are welcome to continue using priority support as is.

The most significant changes made in this release have to do with the discount and tax systems behind the scenes. We’ve been busy dramatically improving the infrastructure of both systems so that we can introduce some really, really cool new features in the upcoming releases. One of the changes that will be most noticeable is the Discount field on the checkout screen. you might notice that there is no longer a “Apply Discount” link; this is because discounts are automatically applied as soon as the customer focuses out of the discount field. This should significantly improve the customer’s checkout experience, especially with the added visual elements we’ve added to the checkout screen that show the amount of the discount just above the cart total.

A new short code has been added to allow customers to edit their account information after creating a user account on your site. The new profile editor includes fields to change the user’s name, email, and password, and can be displayed with the [edd_profile_editor] short code.

System Info

The System Info page will display a detailed break down of information related to your hosting configuration, your WordPress version, the active plugins you have, your current theme, and more. This information is made easily accessible so that you can provide it when asking for support. This makes it easier for us to help get your issues resolved in a more time-efficient manner.

Payment Notes

The new notes feature for payments makes it easy for store managers to leave notes on individual purchases and to track changes to orders over time.

Simply go to Downloads → Payment History and click Edit on any payment. From this screen you can now post notes to payments.

Payment History Search

It is a feature that should have been included since day one, but the ability to search the payment history is finally available. The search system is quite powerful and will allow you to search for payments in a variety of ways:

• Search for all payments connected to a particular user by entering the user ID
• Search for all payments connected to a particular user by entering the user’s email
• Search for all payments connected to a particular user by entering the user’s name
• Search for specific payments by entering the purchase key

This makes it much easier to locate past payments when you need to update a customer’s order, delete a particular purchase, refund a purchase, etc.

Improved Category and Tag Filtering for Product Grid

The [downloads] short code now accepts two additional parameters:

• exclude_category – Used to prevent products in one or more categories from showing.
• exclude_tags – Used to prevent products with one or more specific tags from showing.

Prices Shown on Purchase Buttons

The [purchase_link] short code now has an additional parameter called price that allows you to automatically show the product price on the purchase button. This defaults to on.

Why did you decide to use Easy Digital Downloads for Mint Themes.

Over the years we have used many different systems on Mint Themes and on our other website brands. We’ve used Cart66 and aMember primarily, and we tested a few others, but could never find a solution that worked for all of the needs we have. We found that most of the other eCommerce/Membership scripts & plugins think of digital eCommerce as more of an afterthought and there isn’t as much attention to all of the needs of a digital store. This is why we settled on Easy Digital Downloads.

With ease of use, not overly complex setup, and the ability to create extensions, EDD is an extremely powerful tool for our business. We’ve significantly improved our checkout process and members area. Our customers have already given us praise on the new layout/system.

How was the experience customizing your site with Easy Digital Downloads?

It was really impressive. EDD is very flexible and gave us room to customize it like crazy – while still maintaining it’s solid foundation.

As a designer I spent lots of time reading articles on customer behaviour when it comes to checkout design and the little things that make a difference when creating a high converting checkout page. One of the main goals was to ensure that the new checkout page design was using a one step checkout process and adding a feeling of trust for the buyer. One way we did that was to darken the credit card field area and include a large padlock icon in the background.

All of my design changes were able to be integrated into the EDD checkout with help from Pippin and we will be able to update the main plugin without fear of the checkout page breaking in the future which is a huge bonus.

Are you using any extensions for EDD? If so, which ones?

Yes. We are using around 15 different EDD extensions – almost too many to mention. But some of my most favourite that we use on our production site would be the sales notifications that push to our iOS devices using the pushover extension and the single support sign-on extension for ZenDesk so that the customer doesn’t have to create a ZenDesk account.  It also auto signs them into ZenDesk.

We’ve also made a number of extensions that are being sold on the EDD marketplace.

Any advice or guidance you’d give someone considering making the switch to EDD?

I would say that there really isn’t any other plugin out there with the capabilities, organized and robust code, and overall ease of use that Easy Digital Downloads has. And also, even if you are doing a re-launch of a site that has thousands of users, which might sound really complex and time consuming, it actually wasn’t very difficult at all. With help from Pippin and the EDD development community it made the process of moving away from Cart66 to EDD quite easy

Why did you decide to use Easy Digital Downloads for Jump Start?

When I was setting up an online store to sell Jump Start, I was looking to create a simple checkout process, while still keeping it professional. Currently, I only sell one product on the site and so everything is essentially centered around this one “Add to Cart” button.

In looking around at other shopping cart plugins, it seemed I’d either have to go with the most simple, with something like having my “Add to Cart” button send customers directly to PayPal, which would look sort of unprofessional. Or conversely, my other alternatives were the most complex of plugins where the concept of selling digital products was an added feature or after thought.

I felt EDD provided the perfect solution designed around specifically selling digital products and gave me just the kinds of features I was looking for. Customers are given a clean, simple checkout process. They pay, they receive their downloads, and I’m given a simple interface to manage it all. That’s all I needed and what EDD gave me. And the best part? In the future, if I want to expand my store to start selling more products, I’ll already have the infrastructure in place to do that because of EDD.

How was experience customizing your site with Easy Digital Downloads?

For me personally, I love to hack away at things. Naturally, as development moved on, I kept coming up with specific, unique things that I wanted to incorporate into my site to spice things up like a floating shopping cart, custom Ajax add to cart button, making users’ downloads available throughout a multi-site network, displaying version numbers, adding expirations to product downloads, etc.

No matter what it was that I wanted to accomplish, if I just dug through the available functions, action hooks, and filters available in EDD, it felt like there was a way I could accomplish just about anything from my site’s own custom plugins. As a developer, this extendibility is something I truly appreciate.

Are you using any extensions for EDD? If so, which ones?

On my site I’m currently using PDF Invoices, which adds a nice professional touch to the checkout process by giving customers a downloadable PDF invoice. Although, the extension I’m still really excited to be using is the Software Licensing plugin, which provides my customers a way to update the theme they’ve purchased through their WordPress admin panels directly from my servers. The day I went live with my EDD-powered store, to kick everything off, I went to my live demo of the WordPress theme I’m selling and did the first official live update. Take my word for it; it was a beautiful thing seeing my live demo’s theme automatically update from Beta to v1.0.0 without a hitch in a matter of seconds.

In the future, as I try to expand on the Jump Start project and inevitably attach a child theme shop onto the site, I’m excited to explore the other extensions EDD has to offer like Affiliates Pro, Manual Purchases, User History, Email Templates, and the other various ways of incorporating payment gateways outside of PayPal.

Any advice or guidance you’d give someone considering making the switch to EDD?

In my opinion, the beauty of the system that Pippin has setup is that it’s a completely free open-source plugin that people can contribute to on Github, but because of his passion and how he can benefit from sales on the extensions, you can be sure he’s kept motivated to keep it going and make sure it’s always the best that it can be. So, if you’re considering making the switch to EDD, this means that you have the freedom to simply try it out for free. Setup a WordPress site, install EDD, and decide if you like it or not. Why not, right?

Be sure to make careful note of how your payment processor uses tax. PayPal, for example, accepts the “amount” (subtotal) and “tax” and then adds them together for the final purchase cost.

This post is to show you how to record errors during payment processing.

This feature will allow you to set a limit on the number of times that a buyer can download the files from each purchase. For example, if you set this to 10, buyers will only be able to download each file 10 times. If they attempt to download the file again, they will be given an error letting them know that they are at their limit.

The other big update in v1.3.1 is the new logging system that we have built into the plugin. This logging system allows us to easily log events as they happen in the plugin. For example, each time a file is downloaded, information about the user is logged in the database so that you as the admin can go in and look at exactly who has downloaded the files (and where they have downloaded them from).

The logging system will soon be expanded to include error logging for payment gateways, so anytime there is a purchase that results in an error (such as a declined card), the error will be logged. This will be extremely useful for store owners that need to track down failed payments, credit card fraud, and anything else related to purchases.

There were several other changes introduced in 1.3.1, so checkout the complete change log below:

We’ve gone beyond just bringing improved graphs, however, and have also introduced additional reporting views for Downloads and Customers. The Downloads reports view displays a table of all of your products and displays the total sales and earnings for each product, along with also showing monthly averages for sales and earnings.

The Customers view shows a table of every person that has ever purchased anything through your site. For each customer you can see their email, username (if any), number of purchases, and total amount spent through your site. The customer’s username is also linked to the Payment History page with payments filtered to show only purchases of that customer.

The Reports page is also highly extensible so additional graphs and views can be added via extensions. The Commissions add-on is an example of an extension that adds extra graphs to the page.

With 1.3, the other major change we made was with the purchase buttons. The button styles that were used since 1.0 were based on the designs by Orman Clark have now been replaced with a Twitter Bootstrap style, as seen in the screenshot below:

Along with introducing a cleaner style, the new buttons use much simpler HTML that is dramatically easier for users that wish to customize the appearance of the buttons.

A few other updates were made as well, the most notable being the addition of “Unpaid Totals” section added to the Commissions page in the Dashboard. This lets you quickly see exactly how much the store has in unpaid commissions, making it easier for you to monitor how things are doing.

The new UI is largely due to the excellent work done by Spencer Finnell, our most recent contributing developer, who has also just joined us as an official contributor to Easy Digital Downloads. With his exquisite attention to detail and excellent developmnent practices, Spencer was able to dramatically improve the UI that has been around since the very first version of the plugin.
Other changes in v1.2.2 include new language files for Arabic speakers, a new Dashboard Earnings widget, several significant bug fixes, a fix for a security flaw, and many other minor bug fixes.

Another important note, though one that actually relates to v1.2.1, is the new templating system available for short codes. There are template files located in includes/templates that you cn copy to a folder named edd_templates in your theme in order to customize the short code output for [downloads], [purchase_history], [download_history], and [download_cart]. These template files make it dramatically easier to adapt Easy Digital Downloads to the specific needs of your site.

As an open source plugin, I am always looking for extra developers to help out by squashing bugs, making enhancements, creating documentation, etc. I work on the plugin every single day and several of the other developers contribute code at least once per week.

In order to continue making Easy Digital Downloads better and better, I’d like to encourage others to help out as well. Tom McFarlin wrote a fantastic article on the reasons why he chose to contribute to the project, and I’d highly recommend reading it. Tom pointed out some of the reasons open source projects are valuable to you as a developer, but if you need added incentive to help out on the project, I’m offering to give away paid add-ons to any and all users that contribute to the project.

If you’re a developer, follow the project on Github and checkout the current Issues we have open. There are lots of minor bugs that need fixed, as well as a lot of planned enhancements. You’re also more than welcome to submit your own ideas for improvements to the plugin. Once you have a fix or improvement, simply submit a pull request and I will review your code.

Documenting hooks, filters, and functions is also something EDD is always in need of for the Developer’s API.

If you’re not a developer, there are still a lot of ways that you can contribute to the project. Usage documentation needs constant work, as does the Theming section. You can also help by writing reviews of the plugin on your own sites, like Dave Clements did.

Along with the security improvements, there were also significant enhancements made to the discount code system so that buyers can only use a discount code once, as opposed to being able to use the same code over and over again for every purchase.

Another major upgrade was added that allows you to display a list of download links on the “success” page after a user completes the purchase. This option is primarily designed for sites that process all orders as guests (where the users don’t log in). This update will allow guest buyers to download their files immediately after purchase, without having to check their email. You will find this option in Downloads > Settings > General, as shown below:

The big thing that has changed with this version is the ability to set download source files as only being available to certain price options. You can now setup multiple price options for a product, and then select download files for each price, so if a user purchases price option one, they get file X and Y, but if they purchase price option two, they get file W and Z. Located in Settings > Emails, the template system for the purchase receipts allows us (be default) to select from two different included templates:

• Default – a simple, yet attractive frame
• Plain Text – a regular, plain text email

[downloads] Short Code

This short code can be used for outputting a list or grid of downloadable products, including thumbnails, titles, excerpts and purchase buttons. The short code has a variety of parameters, including ones for limiting the display to only downloads in specified categories and/or tags.

[download_discounts] Short Code

The [download_discounts] short code can be used to output a list of all currently active discount codes. This would work very well for a “promotional” section of your site will you show all of the promotions you currently have running.

Improved Security

One of the more important updates we’ve made with EDD v1.0.8.3 is a significant improvement to the security of your download files. Anytime you upload a file to a product, it is stored in a special folder in your wp-content/uploads folder specific to Easy Digital Downloads. Prior to v1.0.8.3, the uploaded files just sat here and could be pretty easily accessed if someone knew the URL. Now, however, .htaccess files are generated for every sub folder within the EDD folder that blocks unauthorized users and prevents the folder from ever being browsed.

This should certainly help to mitigate the fears of anyone who is concerned about pirates getting their files without purchasing them.

Since v1.0, there has been a short code that was used to display a list of all files a user has purchased. This short code was a little limited, however, as it did not include dates, amounts, or IDs of purchases. It just listed the files. For this reason, we have now introduced the short code, which can be used for displaying a detailed list of all orders the user has purchased. See the screenshot below for an example:

Another of the major updates in v1.0.5 is the introduction of free downloads. Any download set with a price of zero, will be considered free. When a user checks out, if the total amount in their shopping cart is 0, they will bypass all payment gateways and only be asked to enter their name and email.

Aside from its very specific purpose, one of the things that I feel makes Easy Digital Downloads great is its modularity, which allows for add-on extensions to be built for all kinds of purposes. At the time of writing this, there are already six different add-ons available for download and purchase, and not all of them were written by me! A community of developers is being built around Easy Digital Downloads, which just makes it even better!

Another exciting thing about getting Easy Digital Downloads out the door is that the extensive documentation has also begun getting written. While I don’t have even 1/4 of it done, it is getting there. Once complete, there will be an entire Developer’s API documentation as well, which will make it even easier for other developers to create extensions and add-ons for Easy Digital Downloads.
