Want to increase sales? Customers are more likely to purchase from a store if the prices are in their own currency.

Easy Digital Downloads now makes it easier than ever to display and accept payments in more than 200 currencies anywhere in the world. 🌐

🎉 Today we are excited to announce Multi Currency for EDD 💶 💷 💴 💵

With multi-currency support, potential customers will be more likely to purchase from your website because:

  • They can see prices in their own currency (no mental math!) and
  • Avoid additional currency conversion fees on their bank statements (no surprises)

Take that competitors!

In the past you needed in-depth knowledge of code or had to hire a developer for functionality like this. Not anymore. You can manage it all with EDD without leaving your WordPress dashboard.

We’ll walk you through the highlights:

  • A currency switcher for site visitors on the frontend
  • Complete exchange rate controls on the backend
  • Fully integrated and supporting 200 currencies

Currency Switcher

Customers can switch currencies with just a click. Choose from buttons if you’ll support a few, or a dropdown if you’ll support a bunch. Display the currencies in a widget. This widget can be shown on product pages and the checkout page to give potential customers every opportunity to switch.

Set the Exchange Rate Yourself or Automatically

EDD’s Multi Currency extension lets you automatically ‘set and forget’ the exchange rates with the Open Exchange Rates API. Leave it automatic and never have to think about it again. Select the Auto Update Exchange Rates option.

Simply leave the ‘Set the exchange rate manuallyunchecked on any currency you want automated.

One word of caution is how PayPal treats payments received in foreign currencies. The fees for those payments are denominated in those currencies. At the end of the fiscal year, you have a report for *each* currency, with revenue and fees (expenses) that must be reconciled back to your native currency. Since the exchange rate fluctuates throughout the year, it is difficult to be 100% precise with the final accounting, particularly of the fee expenses (you can check the revenue against the received native currency). In contrast, accepting multiple currencies is painless with Stripe.

Thanks for sharing this info Bitsum! I’ll discuss with the team if there are EDD PayPal Docs that should be updated with more details.

Also +1 on Stripe being painless. It’s our top recommendation to use Stripe with EDD if it’s available in your country – https://stripe.com/global. PayPal is also a good option and available in more places.

Can you please confirm the behavior when a recurring payment is received in a currency that has since been disabled? For instance, say I at one time supported RUB, but then disabled it. Would a recurring payment received in RUB be properly handled and displayed?

I use multiple currencies on Paypal. The paypal reporting for payments provides a record of the total transaction cost as well as our receipts after Paypal fees have been deducted. Makes great sense to use an accounting program that integrates with Paypal.

Then there are another set of costs when withdrawing from Paypal to bank account which include the currency Xchange.

We don’t have too many transactions (15/month but relatively high value) at this point so can afford the time to copy and paste the Paypal records into our income spreadsheet directly.

If it grows we will probably use an integrated accounting program.

Is it possible to include a plugin for pricing based on each country??? Woocommerce has a solution for this, I think….

As a developer supporting a site using Aelia Currency Switcher, I want to give a huge THANK YOU for integrating the solution into EDD! I know this wasn’t easy but the teamwork paid off. I still need some testing but it looks great already.
