PayPal is trusted by hundreds of millions of buyers worldwide. If you’re selling digital products on WordPress, not having it at checkout means leaving money on the table.

The good news? Learning how to accept PayPal payments in WordPress is simpler than you might expect. With Easy Digital Downloads (EDD), you can have PayPal live in a few minutes, and customers can pay with a card even if they don’t have a PayPal account.

This guide walks you through the whole setup.

Why Accept Payments in WordPress?

PayPal is one of the most trusted payment brands in the world, and that recognition pays off at checkout. Buyers who see a familiar option are more likely to complete a purchase instead of abandoning their cart.

According to Digital Commerce 360’s Top 1000 Report, PayPal is accepted by the vast majority of online retailers. That kind of adoption signals trust, and trust drives conversions.

Its reputation for security, reliability, and user-friendliness makes it an ideal choice for accepting payments on your WordPress website.

For digital product sellers on WordPress, how PayPal is added also matters. A basic PayPal buy button redirects customers away from your site to complete payment. A proper eCommerce plugin keeps the experience on your store, handles file delivery automatically, and lets you run coupons and discounts alongside PayPal.

What You Need Before You Start

Before you connect PayPal to your WordPress site, make sure you have three things in place.

  • A PayPal Business account. PayPal requires a Business account to connect with third-party platforms like EDD. Personal accounts won’t work. If you don’t have one yet, you can upgrade your existing account or create a new Business account directly on PayPal’s website.
  • An SSL certificate. PayPal requires your site to run on HTTPS. Most WordPress hosts include a free SSL certificate. If yours doesn’t, you’ll need to add one before you can complete the connection.
  • Easy Digital Downloads installed. The free Lite version includes PayPal support right out of the box. No paid plan required to get started, though it’s highly recommended to eliminate the 3% transaction fee.

Once you have those in place, you’re ready to connect.

Why Use Easy Digital Downloads to Accept PayPal

There are a few ways to add PayPal to a WordPress site, but Easy Digital Downloads is built specifically for digital product sellers.

With EDD, you keep more of every sale. PayPal charges its own standard processing fee, but EDD doesn’t add any platform fee on top of that like some other plugins do.

The setup is also highly capable. One PayPal connection gives your customers multiple ways to pay: PayPal balance, debit or credit cards, Venmo, Apple Pay, and Google Pay — no extra configuration needed after connecting.

How to Accept PayPal Payments in WordPress

Here’s how to get PayPal connected and live on your WordPress site using EDD.

Step 1: Get Easy Digital Downloads

If you haven’t installed EDD yet, that’s the first step.

For the Lite version, go to Plugins » Add Plugin in your WordPress dashboard and search for “Easy Digital Downloads.”

Install Easy Digital Downloads WordPress plugin

Click on the Install Now and Activate buttons.

Already have EDD installed? Make sure it’s updated to the latest version before connecting PayPal. The expanded payment method support requires a recent release.

If you need help setting up your EDD site, you can refer to our Getting Started Guide.

Step 2: Connect PayPal to Your WordPress Site

Go to Downloads » Settings » Payments » PayPal.

Click the Connect with PayPal button. You’ll need to allow browser popups for the PayPal window to open.

Log in to your PayPal Business account, enter your business information when prompted, and follow the steps to authorize the connection.

Once complete, you’ll be returned to EDD and should see a success message and webhook confirmation.

Already connected to PayPal but don’t see these options? If you connected before EDD’s recent payment method updates, disconnect and reconnect to activate the full set of payment options. The disconnect option is on the same settings page.

When you’re done, select Save Changes.

Step 3: Enable the PayPal Payment Gateway

Once you’ve connected your PayPal account to WordPress, you can activate and configure it as a payment gateway. Go to Downloads » Settings » Payments » General.

Toggle the PayPal option under Active Gateways.

If you want PayPal to be the default payment method shown to customers, select it under Default Gateway as well.

In the Payment Method Icons section, you can select the credit or debit cards you want to accept and whether customers can pay with their PayPal balance.

Select Save Changes when you’re done.

Step 4: Preview and Test PayPal Payments

Before going live, run a test purchase to make sure everything works end to end.

To do this, you’ll need at least one product added to your store.

EDD has a built-in test mode you can use to simulate a purchase without processing a real payment. Go to Downloads » Settings » Payments » General and turn on Enable Test Mode.

EDD Settings page showing the Payments tab with sub-tabs (Checkout, Cart, Refunds, etc.) and an off'Enable Test Mode' toggle.

Add one of your products to the cart, go through checkout, and select PayPal.

Confirm that the purchase confirmation page loads and that a receipt email is sent with the download link.

Once you’re satisfied, turn off Test Mode and you’re ready to accept real payments.

How Much Does It Cost to Accept PayPal in WordPress?

Accepting PayPal through EDD costs nothing beyond PayPal’s own processing fee. EDD adds no platform fee on top of that.

PayPal’s standard rate is currently around 2.99% + $0.49 per transaction in the US, though this varies by country and account type. Check PayPal’s pricing page for current rates.

One thing to note: the free EDD Lite plan includes a 3% per-transaction fee on PayPal payments. Upgrading to an EDD Pro plan removes that fee, which adds up meaningfully as your sales grow.

FAQs About Accepting PayPal Payments

Hopefully, this guide helped you understand how ton use EDD to accept PayPal payments on your WordPress site. Before wrapping up, let’s take a look at some of the most FAQs about PayPal payments.

Is it free to accept PayPal payments in WordPress?

Yes, you can accept PayPal payments using the free EDD Lite plugin. PayPal’s own processing fee applies (around 2.99% + $0.49 per transaction in the US), and EDD Lite adds a 3% per-transaction fee on PayPal that’s removed with a Pro plan. EDD itself does not add a platform fee on top of PayPal’s rate.

Do I need a PayPal Business account?

Yes. PayPal requires a Business account to connect with platforms like Easy Digital Downloads. Personal accounts aren’t supported. You can upgrade an existing PayPal account to Business for free directly on PayPal’s website.

Do I need an SSL certificate?

Yes. PayPal requires your site to run on HTTPS. Most WordPress hosts include a free SSL certificate — check with your host if you’re not sure whether yours is active.

Can customers pay by card without a PayPal account?

Yes. When you connect PayPal through EDD, customers can pay with a debit or credit card at checkout without needing a PayPal account. The option appears alongside the standard PayPal button.

Can I accept PayPal without a plugin?

Technically yes; PayPal offers a basic payment button you can embed with HTML. But without a plugin, you get no cart, no order management, no automatic file delivery, and no purchase history. For anything beyond a single donation button, a plugin like EDD is the practical choice.

Can I use PayPal for recurring payments?

Yes. Easy Digital Downloads supports recurring PayPal payments through our Recurring Payments feature, available on paid EDD plans. You can use it to sell subscriptions, memberships, or any product billed on a schedule: weekly, monthly, or annually.
