You can upgrade your Easy Digital Downloads pass to a higher level at any time. An upgrade unlocks more features, and the Professional and All Access passes let you use your license on more sites.
This guide shows you how to start an upgrade from your account. It also explains what an upgrade does to your price, renewal date, and site limit.
Before you get started, make sure you can log in to your Easy Digital Downloads account.
Upgrading From Your Account
To get started, we’ll open your license card in your account. Your license card is where the upgrade link lives.
First, log in to your Easy Digital Downloads account and open the Downloads tab. Your license card shows your pass type, license key, expiration date, and site activations.
At the top of your license card, next to the download button, click Upgrade Pass.

This opens our pricing page, where you can compare every pass side by side. Next, find the higher pass you want to move to. Then, click Get Started under that pass.

At checkout, check the Your Order box before you pay. It lists your new pass marked Upgrading, with your current license key underneath. The price shown is your upgrade price, which is lower than the full price of the new pass.

Note: If Your Order doesn’t show the word Upgrading, you’re buying a separate new pass instead of upgrading. Remove it from your cart and contact our support team from the Support tab of your account.
From there, enter your payment details and complete checkout. Once it’s done, your new pass shows on the Downloads tab of your account.
Note: If you don’t see the Upgrade Pass link on your license card, open the Support tab of your account. Our support team can help you change your pass.
Next, let’s look at what your upgrade changes.
What Changes When You Upgrade?
Here’s what changes when you move to a higher pass:
- Your price. You pay an upgrade price instead of the full price of the new pass, and you’ll see it at checkout before you pay. Upgrades aren’t refundable, because the 14-day money-back guarantee covers new pass purchases only.
- Your renewal date. When an upgrade is applied to your existing license, it keeps your current renewal date. When that date comes, your pass renews at the price of the pass you upgraded to.
- Your features. Your license unlocks the features included in your new pass in Easy Digital Downloads (Pro).
- Your site limit. The Professional and All Access passes let you use your license on more sites.
For example, say your pass renews on December 1. If you upgrade your license on November 1, your next renewal is still December 1. It renews at the price of your new pass.
Each pass comes with its own site limit:
- Personal: 1 site
- Extended: 1 site
- Professional: 2 sites
- All Access: 3 sites
Moving to Professional or All Access raises the number of sites you can activate.
To compare what each pass includes, see our pricing page.
Checking Your Site Activations
After you upgrade, you can check how many of your sites are using your license. Your license card on the Downloads tab shows your Site Activations as a count, such as “1 / 3”.
To see which sites are counted, click View Sites on your license card.

Local and staging sites don’t count toward your site limit.
For the full list of supported staging setups, see WordPress Staging Site Support.
That’s it! Now you know how to upgrade your pass and what an upgrade changes for your price, renewal date, and site limit.

FAQ
Below, we’ve answered some of the most common questions about upgrading your pass.
Will upgrading give me another year on my license?
No. When an upgrade is applied to your existing license, it changes your pass level but keeps your current renewal date. Your license renews at the new pass’s price on that date.
Can I get a refund on an upgrade?
No. Upgrades aren’t refundable. The 14-day money-back guarantee applies to new pass purchases only. For details, see our Refund Requests guide.
Can I upgrade an expired license?
If your license has expired, renew it first. Then, you can upgrade. For renewal steps, see Renewing Your License Key.
I’m using the free version. How do I upgrade to a paid pass?
Start by buying any pass from our pricing page. Then, add your license key to your site. For setup steps, see How to Upgrade from EDD Lite to Pro.
Do my local and staging sites count toward my site limit?
No. Local and staging sites (for example, sites on a .local or .test domain, or a host’s staging environment) don’t count toward your site activations.
